Smartway Compliance Deadlines

Over the last few years, air quality has been revealed to have far-reaching effects on the health and well-being of our citizens. Poor air quality has been found to be the culprit behind numerous public health issues, particularly respiratory illnesses in children, as well as being implicated as a possible factor in global climate change.

To encourage more effective management of our air quality, the EPA has been working to standardize the emissions regulations, basing the national SmartWay Program on California’s CARB initiative.

SmartWay Compliant Trailer Sales and Rentals Keep Your Money in Your Pocket

Prime Trailer Leasing can help you do your part in curbing the spread of harmful air emissions. And here’s the best part. SmartWay compliance can actually save you money over the long haul. By reducing aerodynamic drag and using lighter weight materials, SmartWay compliant trailers and add-ons like the UT1 and UT6 Undertray Systems contribute to significant fuel savings, helping to lower your emissions, reduce your carbon footprint, and keep money in your own wallet.

Transportation Technology for SmartWay Compliance

One goal of the EPA’s Smartway Movement is to promote the widespread adaptation of technological solutions to air emissions issues. Many of the products and solutions outlined below are available from Prime Trailer Leasing’s SmartWay compliant trailer rentals and sales.

  • Aerodynamic Technologies: Small improvements add up to big savings over time and miles driven. UnderTray systems (like the UT1 and UT6 available here) and side fairings contribute to up to 800 gallons per year of fuel savings, and keep up to 9 metric tons of greenhouse gasses per year out of the atmosphere.
  • Idle Reduction Technologies: According to the EPA, truckers who don’t monitor their idle time spend an average of $6000 extra dollars per year in fuel consumption. Idle reduction technology from companies like IdleAir can help you save money on fuel wasted through unnecessary idling.
  • Low Rolling Resistance Tires: Low Rolling Resistance Tires can provide 3% savings annually.
  • Retrofit Technologies: Retrofit technologies like Diesel Oxidation Catalysts and Diesel Particulate Filters provide additional emissions reductions and savings over time.

It’s important for the transportation industry to make efforts to reduce our emissions wherever possible, and relatively modest investments such as the ones laid out above pay off powerful dividends when we tally up our P&L statements at the end of the year.

But while these investments are relatively modest and many can potentially be recouped 100% or more within a rear of their adaptation, they are investments of which you must be aware of and budget for.

About EPA’s SmartWay Movement

Founded in 2004, SmartWay is a public/private collaboration between the EPA and the freight transportation industry that aims to help freight shippers, carriers, and logistics companies improve fuel-efficiency and save money. The regulations apply to trailers 53’ in length or longer. Most fleets must demonstrate SmartWay compliance by 2014; by 2017, all commercial fleets, small and large alike must be in compliance.
